Stretch into Summer with the Carve 2026 Wetsuit Guide

As the water begins to warm up, it’s time to swap the thick winter rubber for something lighter with more flex. Choosing the right summer wetsuit can make all the difference. The Carve Summer Wetsuit Guide highlights the gear that keeps you comfortable, flexible and ready to make the most of the waves, whatever your budget. Each year, surf brands push the limits of wetsuit technology, increasingly with a focus on sustainability.  So whether you’re looking for a wetsuit made with neoprene or Yulex, one made with recycled materials or natural rubber, the choice is yours.

Tips for Buying and Preserving a Wetsuit

As the brands continue to push wetsuit technology forward – refining materials and panel designs to deliver an impressive balance of warmth, flexibility and durability, it’s important to get the most out of your wetsuit and look after it.

1. Prioritise fit
The most important factor in any wetsuit is fit. A wetsuit should feel snug against your body without restricting movement. If it’s too loose, water will flush through the suit and reduce warmth. If it’s too tight, it can reduce paddling, limiting the length and endurance of your session.

2. Choose the right thickness
For spring conditions, 4/3mm is a good transitional wetsuit, going down to 3/2mm once the water starts to really warm up. In midsummer you can drop to a 2/2mm, which still provides warmth while maximising flexibility.

3. Look for flexibility
These days wetsuits use ultra-stretch neoprene designed to reduce shoulder fatigue when paddling. Flexible panels around the shoulders and arms are especially important if you plan on spending long sessions in the water.

4. Consider seam construction
Seams affect both durability and comfort. Look for high-quality suits with glued and blind-stitched seams or taped seams, to reduce water entry and increase lifespan.

5. Think about entry systems
Zipperless, chest-zip and back-zip suits all have advantages. Zipperless and chest-zips tend to offer better flexibility and reduce water flushing, while back-zips are often easier to put on and take off.

The joy of flex, taking good care of your wetsuit will extend its lifespan for several seasons – giving you better value from your gear, and a smaller impact on the planet.

How to preserve your wetsuit

Follow these tips to help look after your wetsuit between surfs.

1. Rinse with fresh water
After every surf, rinse your wetsuit with cold, fresh water to remove salt, sand, and bacteria that can damage the neoprene over time. Avoid rinsing it in hot water, as hot water can break down the materials.
2. Dry it properly
Hang your wetsuit on a wide hanger or fold it over the waist rather than hanging it by the shoulders (check out C-Monsta for great drying hangers). Always dry it in the shade, as direct sunlight weakens neoprene.
3. Store it carefully
When you’re not using it, keep your wetsuit away from sunlight. Also avoid keeping it folded for long periods, as this can create creases in the neoprene.
4. Turn It inside out first
When drying, turn the wetsuit inside out first to dry the inner lining. Once the inside is dry, flip it back to finish drying the outside.
6. Use a changing mat
Avoid standing on gravel and stones when you’re changing which can damage your wetsuit. If you’re changing in a car park then invest in a changing mat.
