The days are getting shorter and the wetsuits are getting thicker. But somewhere else, the water\u2019s still warm and there are people who surf for work, rather than work for surf.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>

I\u2019ve been thinking a lot about the people who\u2019ve traded offices for ocean views, who now live and work a life decided by the waves. <\/span><\/p>\n

I know the pull well. Just a few years ago, I was working an office job in Leeds, living vicariously through Instagram reels of other people travelling the world. Until one day I wasn\u2019t. I quit my job, moved to Cornwall, and trained as a surf instructor. Now, I balance surf coaching with freelance marketing, and live what some people would call the dream. Even still, it\u2019s not the tropics\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

For this guide, I spoke to people working at surf camps around the world. Each of them has built a life that revolves around the ocean, and they encourage others to also escape to the surf, if only for a week or two.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

For Wesley Bermudez in Nicaragua, the ocean has always been more than just a playground. His father was a fisherman, and he passed on to Wes his deep connection to the water. Watching surfers together in his hometown from the age of 5, Wes\u2019s father could see Wes\u2019s deep longing to try the sport.<\/p>\n

Initially, they could only afford a bodyboard, which is how he learned to read the waves. Then at 12, he finally got his first real surfboard.<\/p>\n

Now, Wes runs SandBar Surf School with Verdad Nicaragua, offering specialised programmes centred around progression in surfing, which looks different for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, surfing is my whole life, it\u2019s my work, my way to relax, my passion. My goal now is to give something back to my community, to help a new generation of kids like me find their way a little easier, while keeping alive the same passion the ocean (and my dad) gave me as a kid.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nicaragua has quietly built a reputation as a surfer\u2019s paradise: offshore winds almost year-round, empty beaches, and a culture that\u2019s deeply tied to the ocean.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

Lily first arrived in Sri Lanka in 2017 on a backpacking trip. Back then, she didn\u2019t even know what a surf haven it was, but something about the island drew her back, and within months, she discovered surfing on the East Coast.<\/p>\n

Whilst it wasn\u2019t surfing that brought her to Sri Lanka, it\u2019s the reason that she stayed. She is now the General Manager for Soul & Surf Sri Lanka, a retreat that blends surf, yoga, music, and community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe retreat and caf\u00e9 are tucked into\u202c\u202d one of the south coast\u2019s coves, so I go from meeting to line-up in around 20 seconds, and if\u202c\u202d the crew need me, they can just whistle me in from the beach. Honestly, it couldn\u2019t be a\u202c dreamier set up - longboard waves on tap and the office just a few paddles away.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Sri Lanka offers a softer, more soulful escape: mellow points and a surf community built on creativity and connection.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

On the north-west coast of Africa, Morocco has long been a winter escape for European surfers: with powerful Atlantic swells, and warm sunshine - a stark contrast to the murky skies of the UK.<\/p>\n

Tom Benzaquen grew up in Casablanca, surfing the country\u2019s best spots and couldn\u2019t imagine a career in anything else but surf. After studying hotel management in Switzerland, he became part of the founding team behind Paradis Plage Surf, Yoga & Spa Resort, which opened in 2012.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurfing has always been a huge part of my life. To be able to combine it with my career in hospitality was the dream. At Paradis Plage, we\u2019ve built something that isn\u2019t just a surf camp, it\u2019s an eco-resort where people can escape the stresses of their everyday life and care for their body and mind, where yoga and wellness meet Morocco\u2019s incredible waves.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Courtney\u2019s path to Morocco started with books and a love of yoga, which eventually led her to discover retreats that combined yoga with surf.<\/p>\n

\u201cBooks first drew me to Morocco. Already enthralled by yoga, looking for a retreat with something extra, I came across the yoga\/surf combination, and it brought me to this country of vibrant sunsets and rich history. <\/em><\/p>\n

The moment I landed back home in London, I booked my next trip where I met my husband. Starting the surf camp business a couple of years after that first trip though was my surf instructor husband Moncef\u2019s idea, but if someone asked you to start a surf camp, how could you say no?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Courtney and Moncef have been running Mint Surf together since 2010. Together, they\u2019ve built Mint Surf into a space where guests can switch off and sink into Moroccan life. The camp takes care of everything, surf coaching, guiding, yoga, meals, and accommodation, making it the perfect reset.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

C\u00e9lia grew up between Paris and Madagascar, which is where her love of the ocean began. A painter by trade, she was always looking for a way to combine her fascination with the ocean and her painting.<\/p>\n

In 2021, she made the move to S\u00e3o Miguel, Azores, to set a rhythm of painting at high tide and surfing at low tide.<\/p>\n

\"One surf session there was enough to reshape my entire rhythm: I paint at high tide, I surf at low tide. Today, the tides guide both my practice and my projects.\"<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom this rhythm, Mainty Studio was born. Through retreats, together with one of the best guides on the island, Amandine Marty Pinto, we now invite others to slow down, learn, and immerse themselves in the island\u2019s culture and landscapes, discovering, as I did, the balance between art, the ocean, and a slower pace of life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ana was travelling in Sri Lanka when she caught her first wave, and she fell in love with the sport. From then on, surfing shaped every holiday she planned, though before long, short trips weren\u2019t enough. At which point she took a year off work to surf every day. When she came back to work, she quickly realised that a 9-5 in Switzerland was no longer going to cut it, so quit, sold everything she owned and started travelling again.<\/p>\n

\u201c Eventually, with a group of friends I met while travelling, we created the kind of hostel we always wanted to visit, a place to have fun and the freedom to live how we wanted. The most important thing for us was being able to surf year-round without a wetsuit and to be right on the beach.<\/em><\/p>\n

We found our paradise, and now, the hostel has been running for six years. I chose a life with less money, but one that gives me the freedom and lifestyle I truly love.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Now Ana has created a life where she can surf in a bikini every day, and hosts other people who want to do the same.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>

When Shiraz Ksaiba first visited Taghazout, Morocco, in 2010 on a surf trip, she knew she would return. Four years later, she came back with her two children, and soon after, met her partner, Mhand, a local surf teacher. Coming from a career in London as a photographer, and a film and TV camera operator, Shiraz was ready for a new chapter.<\/p>\n

The pair shared a vision of building something of their own, and in 2015, with only a few thousand pounds in the bank, Amayour Surf was born.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to create something of my own while building a life by the sea that inspires my children and gives us all space to grow.<\/em><\/p>\n

It was a leap into the unknown: a new country, a new culture, a new business. But that\u2019s exactly what motivated me. At Amayour, it\u2019s not just about surfing - it\u2019s about creating a community where our guests and local staff can thrive together.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
