Aussie surfer Kai McKenzie has returned to the waves (not for the first time) after a shark attack claimed his right leg.

Kai McKenzie’s story has become one of extraordinary resilience and hope. After surviving a brutal shark attack that cost him his leg, Kai refused to let the ocean become a place of fear. Months into his recovery, he made the powerful decision to return to the water — paddling out again at the very break where his life changed forever. His return to surfing wasn’t about denying what happened, but about reclaiming what he loves, proving that trauma doesn’t get the final word. Through grit, humour, and an unbreakable spirit, Kai has shown that resilience isn’t just surviving the worst moments, but choosing to move forward anyway, offering inspiration to surfers and non-surfers alike.

A few years ago we featured  an article on a project making surfboards from seaweed, Charlie Cadin is back. This time with the help of bees, could this be the way forward to reduce the environmental impact of surfboards?

"I have made a resin from beeswax, it's the only 100% bio-based and fully biodegradable resin on the planet, disappearing in one month when buried. This reduces the environmental impact hugely, and when combined with a wood or recyclable foam core the possibilities are cool. The biggest thing to me about this project is that it is so simple and cheap to do, hopefully encouraging people to try making their own boards, as glassing can be scary at first."

Patagonia invite you to test the new neoprene free wetsuits 20th- 28th August in the UK. They’ll be hanging out at various locations across the British coastline where visitors wil be able to get in the water with their new Yulex suits.

The entire line of Patagonia’s all-new, high-performance wetsuits is made with natural rubber developed in partnership with Yulex and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

The neoprene-free Yulex wetsuits perform as well or better than conventional neoprene wetsuits. But because the main polymer is produced in trees instead of factories, using natural rubber reduces the CO2 in wetsuit manufacturing by up to ~80 percent. The FSC certified rubber is blended with a small amount of chlorine-free synthetic rubber for increased ozone and UV resistance, and to meet Patagonia’s rigorous demands for durability and strength. The Yulex process also removes over 99% of impurities, resulting in a nonsensitizing material.

During the evening of the 20th, 23rd and 27th, hang out from 6pm- 9pm for an evening of beers and film screenings and learn about how Patagonia are saying #GoodbyeNeoprene.
